Tips for Traveling with Painting Supplies:

Do not put flammable liquids such as turpentine, mineral spirits, or oil painting medium in either your checked or carry-on baggage.
Do not carry palette knives on board a plane (plastic or metal).
Pack large tubes of paint in zip-locked bags inside your checked luggage; not in your carry-on luggage.
Pack pastels and drawing supplies in zip-locked bags whether you carry them onboard or pack them in checked luggage.
You can take small tubes of paint onboard the plane if you store them in one zip-locked bag. Normally, brushes can be stored in your carry-on luggage without a problem, but it is safer to pack them in your checked luggage.
Portable pochade boxes, easels, tripods and backpacks of supplies can be carried onboard so long as you consider them one of your two allowed bags.
As always, allow extra time to get through security.
